Curious about the UC schools

Hey folks, I'm from the East Coast and I've been hearing a lot about 'the UCs' but I really don't know much about them. Can anyone provide an overview of all of the University of California schools? Are there any that are particularly good for pre-med?

Sure, happy to help demystify the University of California (UC) system!

There are 9 undergraduate UC campuses. Here's a brief summary:

- UC Berkeley, aka Cal, is the original UC campus. It's known for its reputation in STEM fields and humanities. The campus is located in the vibrant city of Berkeley, and it's well-regarded as one of the top public universities not only in the US but worldwide.

- UCLA is another highly renowned campus known for its strong programs across a variety of disciplines like psychology, performing arts, and biology.

- UC San Diego (UCSD) is particularly strong in biology and physical sciences.

- UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) is known for the physical sciences, as well as social sciences. It has a gorgeous campus right on the beach.

- UC Davis is recognized for programs in biological sciences, agriculture, and veterinary medicine.

- UC Irvine (UCI) is a strong school for biological and health sciences.

- UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) is known for their programs in earth and marine sciences.

- UC Riverside (UCR) is increasingly known for its programs in the humanities and social sciences. Their School of Medicine draws many pre-med students.

- Lastly, UC Merced is the newest UC campus, opened in 2005, and it might not have the same reputation as the older campuses, but it is growing and developing its array of programs.

In terms of pre-med, all universities have strong coursework to prepare pre-med students. Some, like UCD, UCR (with it's own School of Medicine), UCSD, and UCI, are often highlighted due to their proximity or connections to medical facilities and robust research programs. It's also essential to remember that going pre-med is less about where you study and more about the experiences you get, like research, internships, and patient care hours. Regardless of campus, the UC schools provide numerous opportunities to excel in these areas and prepare for a medical career.

Remember, the application filing period for all UCs is from Oct 1st to Nov 30th, so plan accordingly. Good luck with your college search!
