Difference Between AP English Courses

Hi everyone! I'm planning my senior year schedule and I'm a bit confused. There are two AP English courses – Literature and Composition. Could someone explain the differences? Which one did you find more challenging or enjoyable?

Both AP English Literature and AP English Language are college-level courses, but they focus on different aspects of English studies.

AP English Language and Composition usually revolves around writing, rhetoric, and the art of persuasion. Typically, you'll be analyzing nonfiction works and focusing on the rhetorical strategies writers use to make their point. You'll learn to examine an author's intent and how they construct an argument, and you'll try your hand at crafting persuasive written arguments in return.

On the other hand, AP English Literature and Composition is more about examining literature, from novels and plays to poetry. You'll be diving into deeper theories about themes, symbols, and other literary devices in these works of fiction. You'll also learn how to analyze these elements in your own writing about the literature.

As for which is more challenging or enjoyable, this can vary a lot depending on the individual. If you're more drawn to analyzing prose, poetry, and plays, and enjoy exploring themes and character development, then AP English Literature might be more your speed. On the contrary, if you're fascinated by analyzing arguments, learning the art of persuasive writing, and enjoy exploring nonfiction works, then AP English Language might be a better fit for you. Both courses can be challenging in their own right, but they can also be incredibly rewarding in terms of the skills you develop and the depth of understanding you gain in English.
