Requirements for Air Force Academy?

I've been seriously considering the Air Force Academy as a path after high school. Has anyone here gone through the process of applying? What sort of qualifications, in terms of academics and physical readiness, did you need?

Applying to the U.S. Air Force Academy is definitely a complex and multifaceted process with various academic, physical, and character requirements. Of course, keep in mind there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking, these are the general criteria that the Air Force Academy looks for in applicants:

1. Academics: GPA and SAT/ACT scores are important for any college application, and the Air Force Academy is no exception. The average high school GPA of admitted students tends to be over a 3.8, and the average SAT score is typically over 1300, with the ACT composite score around 30. Your curriculum should also show that you challenged yourself with a rigorous course load, particularly in math and science.

2. Physical Aptitude: All applicants are required to complete the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which tests your ability to handle the physical rigors of academy life. This includes a basketball throw, pull-ups or flexed arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run.

3. Character: The Air Force Academy also puts a big emphasis on leadership potential, personal ethics, and character. Evidence of extracurricular involvement, leadership in school or community groups, and dedication to community service can all demonstrate these qualities.

4. Medical Eligibility: The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board will assess your physical readiness and overall health. Certain medical conditions can disqualify candidates.

5. Nominations: This is unique to service academies. Applicants must receive a nomination from an authorized source, usually a member of Congress.

6. Age: Candidates must be at least 17 years old but not have passed their 23rd birthday by July 1 of the year they enter the academy.

7. Citizenship: Candidates must be U.S. citizens or be in the process of becoming one.

This juggling act makes the application process unique, and it's recommended you start early. Keep in mind that the Air Force Academy, being a military service academy, not only looks at academic achievements, but also values leadership experiences and physical fitness.
