What's the reality of college dorms? Are they like how movies portray them?

So I've seen a ton of movies and shows with these wild college dorm scenes, but for those of you who've actually experienced it or visited campuses, what are dorms actually like? Are there things I should be prepared for that might not be as cool as they seem on screen?

The reality of college dorms can be quite different from what you've seen in movies. For one thing, space is often more cramped than it appears on screen. You'll probably be sharing a relatively small room with at least one other person, so it's essential to be considerate and coordinate who brings what to avoid clutter.

In terms of your social scene, the level of noise can vary greatly depending on your floor mates and how sound carries in the building. It's not all parties and late-night fun, though; you need to respect quiet hours and study time. That being said, dorm life is an excellent way to make friends and get involved in campus life, as you'll be around these people more than anyone else, especially at first when there are orientation events, regular floor meetings, and so on.

One last thing—be prepared for the shared bathrooms, as they're often not as clean or private as you’d like. My advice is to bring shower shoes and a caddy for your toiletries! All in all, going in with an open mind and realistic expectations will help you adjust to dorm life and possibly enjoy it even more than people do in the movies.
