Help! Is a 26 on the ACT good enough?

Hey guys! I just got my ACT score back and it's a 26. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad score for a junior like me who is planning to apply to some pretty competitive colleges. Any input would be much appreciated!

A score of 26 on the ACT is above the national average, which is around 20.7. However, your specific score's competitiveness really depends on the schools you're targeting.

For more selective colleges, the average ACT score for admitted students tends to be in the upper 20s to lower 30s. For example, if you’re aiming for a college like the University of Michigan, the middle 50% of admitted students had ACT scores between 31 and 34.

Don't forget though, it won't be just your ACT score that determines your chances of admission. Other factors—like your GPA, coursework rigor, essays, and extracurricular involvement—are equally, if not more, important.

Also, consider that many schools are continuing to maintain a test-optional policy in light of the ongoing pandemic, so your ACT score may not necessarily be required for your college applications. However, if you feel your ACT score of 26 is not reflective of your academic abilities and you have time to improve, you might want to consider retaking the test.

Keep in mind the average is just a benchmark. Students do get in with scores below the average. So, while it's helpful to hit or surpass these numbers, it's not essential. Adopt a holistic approach to your application—strong essays, notable extracurriculars, and solid recommendation letters can often offset less-than-ideal test scores.
