What's the minimum ACT score typically required for college admission?

I'm starting to look at colleges and I'm getting a little anxious about my ACT score. What's the minimum score that most colleges generally accept? I know it varies by school, but I'm looking for a general idea.

The minimum ACT score required for college admissions can vary significantly from one institution to another, not just because of differing academic standards but also due to varying admission policies.

Global universities and community colleges may have open admission policies where standardized test scores aren't a primary factor in the decision-making process. These schools may not have a minimum ACT requirement at all. Some of these schools may focus more on your high school courses and grades or criteria like personal statements and interviews.

However, for selective colleges that do consider the ACT, a score in the mid-20s can be considered average. Many students aim to score at least a composite score of 24, which is roughly the national average. Yet, remember that at incredibly competitive institutions, the average ACT scores of admitted students can be in the high 30s.

Remember that the ACT is just one piece of your application, and many schools have moved either permanently or temporarily towards being test-optional, meaning they do not require test scores for admissions decisions. This shift has been influenced largely by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing movement towards holistic admissions processes.

Admissions officers also look at your high school grades, the rigor of your coursework, your extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and admissions essays. It's crucial to strive for a balance and present a well-rounded application overall.

That being said, while aiming for higher scores typically can broaden your array of college options, it's always best to research individual schools you're interested in to get an idea of the average ACT scores of admitted students. That will give you a more accurate idea of the scores these institutions are looking for.
