Interior design programs - how to shortlist?

I'm a junior, and I've had my heart set on interior design for as long as I can remember. There's so many top interior design programs out there and I can't quite figure out what separates them. How do I find the best fit for me?

Going about selecting the best fit for an interior design program is a fantastic first step in your college journey. Here are a couple of criteria you could use to sort your options.

Curriculum: Look at the subjects each program offers. See if the program focuses more on the artistic aspect or the technical aspect of interior design. Depending on your interests and career goals, one might be a better fit for you.

Faculty: Consider the backgrounds, specialties, and achievements of the faculty members. Faculty with experience or connections in areas that interest you can be very beneficial.

Accreditation: Check if the university's program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). This ensures that the program meets industry standards.

Opportunities: Look if the schools offer preparation for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam, professional connections, internships, and study abroad programs focused on interior design.

Location: The location of your school can offer unique opportunities. If you're interested in corporate design, a school near a bustling city might be beneficial. If you're more interested in residential design, a school in an area booming with construction could offer unique fieldwork opportunities.

Resources: Does the school offer state-of-the-art design software? What about studio space? Do they have connections with local design firms for internships or jobs?

Culture: Think about class sizes and the connection between students and faculty. Visiting campuses, when it's safe to do so, is an excellent way to understand the culture. In the meantime, a lot of schools are offering virtual tours and other online events.

Financial Fit: Make sure to consider the price tag and your likely financial aid package. Use the schools' Net Price Calculators to get an estimate of what you might end up paying.

While not all of these factors may be important to you, but I hope this list can help you begin to narrow down your choices. Best of luck in your college search!
