Understanding TOEFL Scoring

As an aspiring international student, I need to take the TOEFL. I know higher is better, but what's considered a 'good' TOEFL score or even the max score? How do colleges generally view TOEFL scores? Thanks for all the help!

The TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is scored on a range from 0 to 120 points. Each of the four sections - Reading, Speaking, Listening, and Writing - is scored out of 30, and the scores are then added together for a total composite score.

A 'good' TOEFL score varies depending on the colleges you're interested in. Most colleges have a minimum TOEFL score requirement for non-native speakers. However, for most selective colleges, a score of 100 or above on the TOEFL is commonly seen as strong.

In terms of how colleges view TOEFL scores, they typically use them as a way to ensure that international students – particularly those whose first language isn't English – have sufficient English language proficiency to succeed at their institution. It's often used as a baseline qualifier rather than as something that could bolster your application.

Remember, though, that the TOEFL is just one component of an international student's application. Other factors such as your high school transcript, test scores (if required by the school), essays, and extracurricular involvement are also incredibly important. You should focus on achieving a well-rounded application, while ensuring you meet the necessary English proficiency requirements.
