The Big Debate - SAT or ACT, which is harder?

I'm sitting here in junior year and I gotta make the decision - take the SAT or the ACT. So my question is, which one is actually harder? I've heard a whole range of opinions...

There's no definitive answer to this as the "hardness" of the SAT or ACT can highly depend on the individual's strengths and weaknesses. Some students might find the SAT more challenging, while others might have a tougher time with the ACT.

Key differences exist between the tests. The SAT focuses on reasoning skills, providing students more time per problem, and tends to have trickier vocabulary and reading passages. The Math section draws heavily on Algebra and has one section where calculators are not allowed. The SAT recently went fully digital in 2024, and the test structure is 134 minutes with 98 questions, split between two Reading/Writing modules and two Math modules.

On the other hand, the ACT is a bit more content-based and tests a broader range of topics. Time management can be more challenging due to less time per question. There's a Science Reasoning section, which is less about scientific knowledge and more about interpretation and problem-solving ability. The math section covers more advanced topics like Trigonometry, but allows calculators for the entire section. Students can choose to take the ACT on paper or online.

Given these differences, it might be helpful for you to take some practice tests for both SAT and ACT to gauge where you stand and which style you're more comfortable with. This decision should ideally be based on your strengths in these areas and not on which test is perceived to be "harder".

Remember, both tests are widely accepted by all U.S. colleges and universities, so you're not at a disadvantage regardless of which test you choose. Just be sure to check your prospective colleges' testing policies.

Lastly, I encourage using available resources to help prepare. CollegeBoard provides free practice tests for the SAT. For the ACT, you can use their official prep guide. There are also many online resources like Khan Academy or even prep books that can assist you in preparing for either test. Good luck in your decision-making process!
