How do you pick a topic for a high-level research paper?

Okay, so I've been assigned this big research paper for my AP History class. Daunting, I know. I want to make sure I'm picking a topic that will impress colleges and also be interesting enough to keep me sane while I'm writing. Can anyone recommend how to find or choose one? Appreciate any advice!

Choosing a research paper topic, especially one for an AP History class, can be a significant task but it also allows for a lot of personalization and exploration. First thing to remember is that your paper would ideally combine your academic interests, a challenging subject matter, and relevance to your future aspirations.

Locate the core of your interest within the broad realm of AP History. Is it a specific era, a particular country's history, or a certain historical event or phenomenon that fascinates you?

Once you are clear on your area of interest, start delving deeper into it. Read scholarship essays, online articles, and textbooks to identify potential topics. Look for the ones that provide ample source material for thorough research, yet still have enough room for original thought and interpretation.

Remember, the best research paper topics are ones that can continually pique your intellectual curiosity and keep you motivated during the lengthy process of researching and writing.

As for impressing colleges, they are often interested in seeing your intellectual curiosity and your ability to produce high-level academic work. Your passion for the subject will come through in your writing, and that's what can really make a difference.

Finally, don’t hesitate to ask your teacher for guidance. They could potentially provide you with unique insights or further resources for the topic you have chosen.

For instance, if you are interested in the World War era, you could focus on the impact of women's work on the war effort. This would help you explore a traditional topic from a unique perspective (the role and impact of women, a topic often overlooked). It could also tie into broader themes of social and cultural transitions, attitudes towards gender roles, etc.

Remember, your research paper is your opportunity to showcase your understanding, your analytical abilities, and most importantly, your interest in the subject. So, pick a subject you would be keen to explore and learn more about, rather than something you think will merely impress the colleges.
