Am still contemplating my college major, and computer science has been on my radar for a while now. If anyone here has chosen CS as their major, do you have any advice or experiences you'd like to share? Is it really as promising as it comes off?
Computer Science (CS) is certainly a well-regarded and demanding major, which gives students an in-depth understanding of computing systems' design and functionality. The curriculum usually covers subjects like data structures, algorithms, programming languages, computer organization, and software engineering, to give students a solid theoretical platform as well as practical coding and problem-solving skills.
CS can definitely be demanding, especially if you haven't done much programming before, but many students find CS incredibly rewarding. You'll get the opportunity to solve complex problems, create innovative solutions to problems across a range of industries, and potentially contribute to advances in technology that can have considerable global impact.
In terms of career prospects, the future looks bright. Jobs in CS are projected to grow much faster than the average for other occupations according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also, these jobs offer lucrative salaries, with the median pay exceeding six figures. There's a wide spectrum of industries you can work in, such as software development, data science, cybersecurity, AI, and more.
Remember, majoring in CS doesn't mean you're boxed into a career as a software developer or data scientist forever. The critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills you gain could open doors to roles in managerial or strategic positions as well.
However, Computer Science should not be pursued simply because of its job market appeal. If you enjoy problem-solving, mathematics, and are interested in technology, it could be a good fit. On the other hand, if you're just following the crowd, you may not find the subject as fulfilling.
It might be helpful to take an introductory coding or computer science course, either at your high school, once you get to college, or even online, to get a sense of whether this major is something you would be interested in. Most colleges don't require you to declare a major right away, or allow you to switch if you change your mind, so you don't need to lock yourself in immediately.
You could also consider taking part in a summer program related to Computer Science. CollegeVine's blog has a list of reputable ones for high schoolers: https://blog.collegevine.com/high-school-computer-science-summer-programs/. Some of them are open to beginners, and they'd allow you to both gain some firsthand experience with the field and connect with current CS professionals and educators, who can give you more personalized guidance on the doors the field can open.
Best of luck with your future academic endeavors, whether they're in CS or some other field!
