Can someone explain the subject list for college applications?

Totally confused here haha, what exactly is the 'subject list' in the context of college applications? Is that like a list of majors I want to apply for, or a list of my high school subjects? Or is it something completely different? I really need some clarity. Thanks in advance!

In most cases, when people refer to a 'subject list' in the context of college applications, they'd be talking about the rigorous academic coursework you have undertaken during your high school years. This list would typically include honors courses, AP (Advanced Placement) classes, or even IB (International Baccalaureate) level courses taken, in addition to regular courses that you completed.

It's important as this information provides the admissions office with a better perspective of your academic caliber and helps them understand the level of academic challenge you sought during your high school journey. It illustrates your commitment to learning, your discipline to handle advanced coursework, and your readiness to handle the college-level workload at their institution.

Your 'subject list' would typically be a part of your academic transcript, which would also include your grades for these classes. The colleges you apply to would want to see this transcript. Some applications may also directly ask you for a list of classes taken or the coursework completed during high school. It's significantly less common for the term 'subject list' to refer to a list of potential majors or interests you might want to pursue at college.

Remember, competitive colleges often favor students who have challenged themselves with rigorous coursework in high school, so having AP or IB courses on your subject list can potentially make your application more appealing. However, many schools also use a concept called Academic Index, which factors in your grades, test scores (if available), and class rank (if available), so overall academic performance is also very important.
