Seeking Recommendations for Theater Programs

Hey guys, I'm an aspiring theater major and I was wondering if anyone could provide a rundown about the top theatre colleges in the US? What do the faculties and facilities look like? Also, will my audition be the most important part of my application or will my academics matter too?

Sure, there are several leading colleges with prestigious theatre programs. One prominent institution is Carnegie Mellon University, which boasts an excellent acting program and is famous for its rigorous academic curriculum complemented by a strong faculty. Its facilities include three performance spaces and state-of-the-art technology. Another notable college is Juilliard, which also offers a superb drama program. Additionally, Juilliard's facilities include many theaters, dance studios, and music rehearsal spaces, which should serve as excellent environment for someone like you.

In the Midwest, you'd want to consider the University of Michigan whose musical theater program is one of the best in the country. Their facilities are top-notch, and they have strong connections to Broadway and other theater communities. New York University's Tisch School of the Arts also comes highly recommended, offering a comprehensive theatre study in a city that's at the heart of the theater world.

When it comes to applications, remember that while your audition is exceptionally critical (it shows your raw talent and readiness to be trained), your academic credentials are also significant. Most programs are still academically demanding and admissions committees will likely seek students who can handle the academic load alongside the rigorous theatre coursework and performances. In fact, this is why some colleges that have excellent theatre programs, such as the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), will look at both your grades and your auditions to make their decision.

In preparation, ensure you work on maintaining good grades, and perhaps take some rigorous courses (like AP courses) as they show your willingness to tackle an intense academic environment. This balance will not only help you in the admissions process but also aid in developing you as a well-rounded individual in your career. When it comes to your audition, my advice is to make sure you prepare two varied pieces that will showcase your diversity as an actor.

You want to bring everything you've got in both areas. One shows your potential and talent in theatre, the other shows your readiness and discipline to succeed in an intense college environment. A strong applicant will manage to shine in both. Hope this helps! Good luck on your journey!
