Understanding SAT with Essay Scoring

Hey everyone! I've been hearing about the SAT with essay?? Is that a thing that's still offered? Could someone explain it to me? Thanks!

Actually, as of the year 2021, CollegeBoard discontinued the essay portion of the SAT. Prior to its discontinuation, the SAT Essay was scored separately from the rest of the test, and it did not affect your total SAT score out of 1600. But since March 2021, the SAT Essay is no longer available.

Currently, the SAT test scores in two areas: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, each with a score between 200 and 800. The sum of these two scores forms your total SAT score, which ranges from 400 to 1600.

Also bear in mind that as of spring 2024, the SAT has been a digital-only test. The main test consists of a Reading and Writing section with two 32-minute modules and a Math section with two 35-minute modules. The digital SAT allows for calculators to be used in both math modules.

If you're still looking for further writing evaluation or opportunities, you can consider taking AP classes or subject-specific SAT exams that require written responses. Most colleges also require or recommend submitting an essay as part of the application. This can act as an evaluation of your writing skills, showcasing your ability to communicate effectively and think critically, like the old essay section of the SAT used to do.
