UNT and FAFSA

Anyone knows anything about FAFSA and University of North Texas? Like, how do I go about applying for financial aid if I decide to go there? Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

Applying for financial aid at the University of North Texas (UNT) involves a specific series of steps – luckily most of them involve processes that you would already be doing for your college application process.

1. Complete The FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step to apply for financial aid at UNT. You’ll want to complete the FAFSA as soon as you can because some funding options can be limited. The FAFSA opens on October 1st each year, and for UNT, the priority deadline is May 31st. You'll use your (and your parents', if applicable) tax information from two years prior to the academic year. If you're applying for fall 2025, you'll use 2023 tax information.

2. Use UNT's Federal School Code

When you’re completing the FAFSA, you’ll need to enter UNT's federal school code (003594) so your FAFSA information is sent to the university.

3. Review Your Student Aid Report (SAR)

After you submit the FAFSA, you’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), which summarizes your FAFSA information. Review it carefully for errors.

4. Examine Your Financial Aid Offer

Once UNT receives your FAFSA information and you’re accepted to the university, you’ll get a financial aid award offer. This can include a combination of grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans. Each source has different terms and conditions, so make sure you understand them before accepting any offer.

5. Accept or Decline Your Aid

You'll have the opportunity to accept or decline parts of your financial aid offer. Make sure you only take out loans that you truly need, as they must be paid back with interest.

Please note: if you do not meet the May 31st priority deadline, still submit the FAFSA as soon as you can because financial aid such as Pell Grant or other federal aid is awarded year-round, as are many student loans.

Remember, UNT also offers a net price calculator on its website (https://estimatemytuition.unt.edu/) that you can use to estimate your total cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, housing, dining, books, transportation, and other expenses.

It's also good to remember that UNT has several merit-based scholarships which you may be eligible for. Your admission application will automatically consider you for most of these scholarships, but I encourage you to look up UNT-specific scholarships to see if there are any you might need to apply for separately.

Good luck with your financial aid and college application journey!
