Financial aid at San Francisco State University (SFSU)

Am considering applying to SFSU, anyone can fill me in on their financial aid? How good are they with aid and any insights on the application process?

San Francisco State University, akin to other state institutions, does offer a variety of financial aid options that could potentially decrease the cost of your education there. This includes scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study opportunities.

SFSU recommends that all students, regardless of income, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is because the FAFSA is also used to determine eligibility for some types of state and institutional aid, not just federal aid. The new FAFSA usually opens every year on October 1st and you should complete it as soon as possible to access the widest range of aid. Important to note, however, is that the calculation for federal aid has changed starting from 2023. They now use Student Aid Index (SAI) instead of Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as a key measurement piece.

On the institutional level, SFSU offers scholarships for incoming students which you can apply for through their scholarship portal. You can even sort and search for scholarships based on specific criteria that may suit your profile or needs, so be sure to take advantage of that.

Lastly, remember that financial aid packages can vary greatly depending on factors like household income, number of children in college, etc. Thus, the best way to predict what your package might look like is to use SFSU's Net Price Calculator (https://financialaid.sfsu.edu/sites/default/files/documents/net_price_calculator.html). This tool asks questions about income, GPA, test scores (if available), and etc. and provides an estimate of your financial aid.

Keep in mind, like most financial aid, it is critically important to apply early and on-time for the best chances to secure as much funding as possible. Check all the deadlines and make sure to submit everything as promptly as you can. Good luck with your application!
