What should I expect for Mount Holyoke admissions?

Hello! I'm a junior and Mount Holyoke is on my college shortlist. Just wondering, what is the general admissions process like and does anyone have any tips on what they're looking for in applicants?

Mount Holyoke has a holistic approach when reviewing applications. They'll consider your academic coursework, GPA, letters of recommendation, and personal essays. They are test-optional for the 2024-2025 admissions cycle, so you aren't required to submit your SAT or ACT scores, though you can do so if you feel they represent your academic potential well.

As a liberal arts women's college, Mount Holyoke values diverse perspectives and intellectual curiosity. In your essay, you might want to show how you'll contribute to the collegial atmosphere—perhaps by discussing a time you deepened a conversation, or engaged with a diverse set of viewpoints. Also, remember to show why Mount Holyoke is a good fit for your academic and personal goals. You may want to research specific classes, professors, or clubs at Mount Holyoke that align with your interests and discuss them in your application.

Involvement in extracurriculars is also valued. Admissions is likely to be more impressed by deep involvement and leadership in a few activities, rather than minor participation in a larger number. Therefore, focus on showcasing your commitment, your role, and the impact you made in these activities. These can be within or outside of school, and can include part-time jobs, caring for family members, or self-driven projects.

Mount Holyoke also offers optional interviews which may be a useful addition to your application, as demonstrated interest is considered.

Ensure to pay close attention to application deadlines: Early Decision I is November 15 (binding), Early Decision II is January 3 (binding), and Regular Decision is January 15.

Lastly, Letters of recommendation play an important role too. Here's something important about recommendation letters: you'll need a teacher recommendation, a counselor recommendation, and you may choose to include an additional recommendation.

Remember, admissions is not simply about ticking academic boxes; it's about creating a compelling narrative that shows how you have developed over your high school career and how you will contribute to the Mount Holyoke community. Good luck!
