Sifting Through Possible Majors

Hey all, I'm pretty lost if I'm honest. I've been looking into things to major in college but it's a dizzying array of choices. How did you decide what to major in? Any kind of advice on this would be helpful!

Don't worry, you're not alone in this situation. A lot of students feel overwhelmed when choosing a college major, and it's perfectly normal. Here are some ways in which you can narrow down your options:

1. Identify your interests: Are there particular classes or subjects which you've enjoyed in high school? Are there topics about which you'd love to expand your knowledge? Your interests could provide some clear indicators of what you might want to study in college.

2. Evaluate your skills: Sometimes our skills align with our interests, other times they might surprise us. Do you excel in particular areas? These skills might lend themselves well to certain majors. For example, if you're good at problem-solving and maths, then you might enjoy a major in a STEM field.

3. Reflect on your career aspirations: While many majors can lead to a range of different careers (a psychology major, for example, can go into counseling, human resources, marketing, etc.), some career paths do require specific majors or pre-requisites. If you know you want to be a doctor, for example, you'll need to take certain classes for medical school requirements, although you can major in anything.

4. Take some college courses: If you're currently in college, consider taking classes in fields that catch your interest during your first year or two. Sometimes students discover their majors simply by taking a course they find intriguing, thereby sparking a passion they never realized they had.

5. Consider the Practical Side: It might be beneficial to research potential careers that certain majors can lead to and consider factors like job outlook and potential salaries.

Just remember that many people change their majors during their college journey and that's perfectly fine. College is a time to explore and find what truly brings you joy and fulfillment. Good luck!
