How tough is it to get into the University of Utah?

Hey everyone! I'm currently exploring applications and the U of Utah is on my list. I've been prepping as much as I can, but I'm still worried. What’s their acceptance rate? Are there any tips that could help me in the application process? Thanks in advance!

The University of Utah, popularly called U of U, has an acceptance rate that hovers around 62% (as of 2024-2025 admissions). This makes it a somewhat selective institution. However, remember that the acceptance rate is just one factor in the admissions process.

When applying to U of U, make sure you have a strong academic profile. They will consider your high school GPA, the rigor of your coursework (honors, AP classes, etc.), and your high school class rank if available. These factors are all part of the Academic Index used by many institutions to judge the strength of an applicant’s academic profile.

For the 2024-2025 application cycle, U of U is test-optional, meaning you can choose whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores. If you feel your test scores improve your application, you may choose to include them.

Apart from these numerical metrics, the U of U will also look at your extracurricular activities, which can help to differentiate you from other applicants. Remember the 4 tiers of extracurriculars as you evaluate what you've accomplished outside the classroom. Being involved in a select few high-quality activities, especially those in which you hold a leadership role, will appear more favorable than involvement in many low-tier activities.

Your application essays also offer a crucial opportunity to showcase your unique perspective, experiences, and goals. Be sure to craft thoughtful and personal essays that allow the admissions committee to understand who you are beyond your academics.

Lastly, always have a back-up plan. While U of U may be your top choice, ensure to apply to a mix of reach, match, and safety schools to increase your chances of getting accepted somewhere you would be happy to attend.

Good luck with your applications!
