How does the US Coast Guard Academy view applicants?

Enlisting in the Coast Guard has always been a dream of mine, hence I consider President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s US Coast Guard Academy as my top option post high school. I wanted to ask if anyone could provide me with insights on the academy’s admissions process, specifically what they look for in prospects or any tips to boost my application.

The US Coast Guard Academy emphasizes the importance of academics, leadership skills, and physical health in their admissions process. These factors will make up the core of what they're looking for in their prospective class.

When it comes to academics, it's crucial that you show strength in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. This is due to the career paths this academy feeds into, which are primarily technical and scientific in nature. It's also beneficial if you're enrolled in the highest level courses offered by your school. If there are AP STEM courses available to you, taking them—and doing well in them—can certainly bolster your application.

Leadership skills are also quite crucial. The academy is interested in future leaders, and want to see that you have a record of demonstrated leadership in high school. For example, this can involve holding leadership positions in clubs or organizations, or working on significant projects that showcase your leadership abilities. Examples of these might include community service projects or initiatives you've spearheaded within your school.

Physical fitness is also very important. The academy has a physical fitness exam that all cadets must pass, so maintaining good physical health and participating in physical activities or sports can be beneficial in your application. The academy doesn't require you to play a varsity sport, although involvement can show commitment and teamwork.

Lastly, write compelling essays. This is your chance to shine and convey who you are beyond your grades and extracurricular activities. Share your experiences, detail your interest in the Coast Guard, and discuss how you would contribute to the academy's community.

Getting ample time to prepare for this process will allow you to build up the right skills and attributes. Good luck with your application!
