Can anyone explain what valedictorian and salutatorian mean?

Hey guys, I've heard these terms being thrown around a lot but I don't quite get it. Can someone breakdown what valedictorian and salutatorian mean? How are they chosen and what significance do they have for college admissions?

Valedictorian and Salutatorian are distinct honors bestowed upon two high-achieving students at graduation of a high school or secondary school.

The Valedictorian is usually the student with the highest GPA of their graduating class, typically holding a 4.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. This honor is seen as the highest academic honor a student can achieve in their secondary education.

The Salutatorian, on the other hand, is the second highest-ranking student in the graduating class, with the second highest GPA.

The mechanism for selection can vary by school. While many schools purely base the accolade on GPA, others may consider other factors like extracurricular involvement, service hours, or leadership roles. In some cases, students might be asked to submit an application or give a speech to be considered for Valedictorian or Salutatorian.

With regard to college admissions, being a Valedictorian or a Salutatorian is considered a significant distinction that can bolster the academic portion of your application. It shows that a student has excelled academically throughout their high school years.

Colleges do note these accolades, but it's important to remember that they are just one part of the overall admissions consideration. They won't make or break an application on their own—especially at highly selective schools, where many applicants may hold these titles—but they can certainly be a feather in your cap.

It is crucial, however, not to focus solely on these honors to the detriment of developing a well-rounded application. Extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, impressive essays, and other elements can be just as significant, if not more so, in differentiating one top-performing applicant from another. Colleges are looking for dynamic students who will contribute both inside and outside the classroom. So it's essential to show that you are more than just your grades, even if they are top-notch.
