Where can I study to become a video game designer in college?

Hey, I'm super passionate about gaming and would love to get into video game designing. I don't really know where to begin when it comes to finding the right college for this field, does anyone have any suggestions or insight?

Sure, it's wonderful that you have identified your passion and you're planning to pursue it in college. To prepare for a career in video game design, you should consider pursuing a degree program that specializes in game design or related fields such as Computer Science, Animation, or Graphic Design.

There are several universities offering game design programs that are well-regarded in the industry. The University of Southern California has an excellent program in game design. Within their Interactive Media & Games Division, they offer an undergraduate degree in Interactive Entertainment which combines a strong grounding in game design with coursework in related areas like animation, creative writing, and computer programming.

Carnegie Mellon University also offers a Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA) interdisciplinary program with a concentration in Game Design. It combines the strength of the College of Fine Arts and the School of Computer Science.

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is another university known for its game design program. Bachelor’s degree programs at RIT include the Game Design & Development degree and the New Media Interactive Development degree. Both degrees combine technical coursework (programming and software development) with design and story-telling courses.

Furthermore, DigiPen Institute of Technology is entirely dedicated to degrees that will apply to video game creation. They have a degree in Computer Science and Game Design which focuses on game design and computer science, along with related areas like mathematics and physics.

Another great school is Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), which offers a degree in Interactive Design and Game Development. This program is particularly noted for its strong focus on art and design aspects of game development.

These are just a few examples, but there are many other colleges and universities offering fantastic programs in game design across the country. Make sure to research the specific curricula and course offerings at each school to see which one lines up best with your interests and career goals. Good luck!
