What does ACT actually test?

So, I'm starting to prep for the ACT, but I'm not really sure what I'm preparing for. I know about the sections (English/Reading/Science/Math), but what kind of questions do they ask? How do they test you? Any clarity would be a lifesaver.

Sure, let's break down what each section of the ACT evaluates:

1. English: This section examines your understanding of English grammar and effective language usage. It presents several passages with underlined phrases or clauses where you may need to correct punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, or usage. Questions may ask you to identify the clearest, most concise version of an underlined portion, or to decide if an underlined portion is grammatically correct or pertinent to the passage.

2. Math: This section tests your mathematical abilities from pre-algebra to trigonometry. Questions here might ask you to solve equations, interpret graphical data, or apply geometric concepts. Some problems may require knowledge of more complex concepts like matrices, logarithms, and advanced probability.

3. Reading: This portion is about reading comprehension. It comprises a series of passages on different topics for you to read and then answer questions. It is testing your ability to understand and analyze what you read, find evidence in a passage, and understand its tone and the author’s viewpoint.

4. Science: This section doesn't require specific science knowledge; instead, it tests your interpretation and reasoning skills based on the provided scientific information. You'll find passages that describe experiments or scientific results, along with accompanying charts, graphs, and tables. The questions will require you to make sense of the data and possibly compare different hypotheses or experimental designs.

5. Writing (optional): If you choose to take the ACT with Writing, the essay prompt presents three different perspectives on a controversial issue. Your task is to evaluate and analyze the perspectives; to state and develop your own perspective and to explain why your perspective is the correct one using evidence and explanations.

Finally, remember, the ACT does not penalize for wrong answers so your score is based on the number of correct answers.

Hope that helps! Best of luck with your prep!
