Determining the Average ACT Score Across Colleges

I need some advice on my ACT score. I've looked it up but can't seem to get a clear cut understanding of what's considered a 'good' ACT score for most universities. How does one go about finding the mean ACT score? Should I be concerned if my score is below the average?

Determining a 'good' ACT score can vary significantly based on the colleges you're primarily aiming for. Some universities may consider a score above 24 as acceptable, while others such as the Ivy League and other highly competitive institutions, might seek scores closer to a perfect 36.

In general, you should aim for a composite score of 30 or higher to be competitive at most accredited four-year colleges. This would put you in the top 5% of test-takers nationwide and is a universally strong score.

Getting to your point about the mean ACT score, most colleges publish their average ACT scores (or a middle 50% range) which can give you a ballpark figure of what admitted students typically achieve. You can usually find this with a quick search of "[College Name] average ACT score" or by looking on the college's admissions webpage.

If your score is slightly below the average, don't lose hope. Remember that the average means that there are students who were admitted with scores higher and lower than that number. A lower score doesn't seal your fate, and colleges consider many other aspects of your application - from your GPA to your essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.

Look holistically at your entire application package as you consider your chances at any given school. Keep in mind, if you have time, you can always retake the ACT to try for a higher score. Just maintain a realistic expectation and focus on your strengths to enhance your overall application. Good luck!
