Miami University Admission Requirements

I'm planning on applying to Miami University next year and wanted to know what their admission requirements are. Does anyone know what they look for in terms of GPA, test scores, extracurriculars, etc.?

When applying to Miami University, there are several components of your application that are considered in the admissions process. The following are some key areas the university will review:

1. Academic Performance: Miami University takes a close look at your overall high school GPA along with the rigor of your coursework. A competitive academic record includes AP and honors courses where available. The average accepted student typically has a GPA of around 3.89, so you'll ideally want to have mostly A's on your transcript.

2. Extracurricular Activities: Miami University, like many other schools, is interested in applicants who demonstrate leadership and are active members in their communities. The quality of your engagement is more important than the quantity.

They use the 'Tiers of Extracurriculars' system to evaluate your involvements. Having a few Tier 1 or Tier 2 extracurriculars can make your application stand out - to learn more about extracurricular tiers, check out this blog post from CollegeVine: https://blog.collegevine.com/breaking-down-the-4-tiers-of-extracurricular-activities

3. Test Scores: Miami University is test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle. While you can still submit your SAT and ACT scores, they are not a requirement for admission. If you choose to submit, historically, the middle 50% SAT score range is 1170-1350 and the ACT score range is 24-29.

However, your chances of acceptance will not be disadvantaged if you opt out of submitting these scores. Do remember, if you don't submit test scores, other aspects of your application like your GPA and extracurricular involvements become even more crucial. To learn more about how to navigate test-optional policies, and whether you personally should submit a test score, I'd take a look at this blog post from CollegeVine: https://blog.collegevine.com/does-test-optional-mean-test-optional/

4. Letters of Recommendation: Miami University requires at least one letter of recommendation from a counselor or a teacher in a core academic subject. Getting an outside perspective on your candidacy can give them a more concrete sense of what you'd contribute to their campus community, academically and personally.

Remember, the university takes a holistic approach to reviewing applications, so all these components together play a significant role in your admission decision. Make sure you're putting your best foot forward in each and every element, rather than relying on any single credential to get you in on its own.

Good luck with your application!
