What areas does the SAT test cover?

Feeling a bit stressed about my upcoming SATs, trying to prepare as much as I can. Could someone clarify what the test encompasses? Like, what kind of topics can I expect and how can I make sure I'm prepared for them?

Sure, I'd be happy to help clarify!

The SAT, as of Spring 2024, has two main sections: Math, and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. This test is fully digital, so you'll be using a computer rather than a paper and pencil.

1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section: This part of the test is split across two 32-minute modules with a total of 54 questions. Here, you'll encounter questions that will test your reading comprehension skills, grammar and usage, and your ability to interpret and evaluate texts. You will read from texts that might be excerpts from literature, historical documents, scientific articles, or social studies sources.

2. Math Section: Like the Reading section, this part is also split into two 35-minute modules, but with 44 questions. The Math section covers two main areas, algebra and problem-solving/data analysis. It's worth noting that unlike the old paper-based SAT, you can use a calculator on both modules of the Math section with the new digital SAT.

To prepare for these sections, I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with the format and type of questions that appear in the test. Taking full-length practice tests is one of the most effective ways to prepare (The College Board has free online tests available). And remember, being comfortable with the digital format is as important as mastering the material itself. Make sure to take a visit to the Bluebook™ app, which provides full-length digital practice tests to mimic the real testing experience!

Focus on areas where you feel the least confident. You’ll want to practice until you feel comfortable with the types of questions you’ll encounter in those sections. Furthermore, it could be beneficial to review key grammar principles, mathematical concepts, and enhance your reading skills by engaging with various complex texts.

Last but not least, keep a healthy mindset! Make sure you're taking breaks, eating balanced meals, and getting sleep. It can feel overwhelming, but remember you're doing your best and that's what counts. Good luck!
