What does the SAT test look like?

Hello! I'm getting ready to take my SATs and I'm a bit nervous. To put my mind at ease, could anyone help break down what does the actual test look like? How many sectors does it have and how much time do they allocate for each?

Sure, I'd be happy to break it down for you!

As of Spring 2024, the SAT is fully digital format. It's divided into two sections – Reading & Writing and Math. There are two components or modules, each timed separately within each section.

In the Reading & Writing section, you will be given two 32-minute modules in which you need to answer a total of 54 questions. This means you'll have roughly 71 seconds to answer each question.

Similarly, for the Math section, there are also two modules, each taking approximately 35 minutes. 44 questions need to be answered across both modules which means you get approximately 96 seconds, or a little over a minute and a half, per question.

You can and should use a calculator on both math modules.

This makes for a total testing duration of 134 minutes (a little over two hours), during which you will respond to 98 questions. I recommend using the Bluebook™ app for practice, as it allows you to preview the digital SAT format and even take full-length practice tests.

Remember, adequately preparing and understanding the test format is the key to reducing your nerves. Best of luck on your upcoming exam!
