Need some guidance on understanding SAT scores

Hello there! I'm a bit confused on how the scoring system for the SAT works. Can someone break it down for me? Like, how do they calculate the final score? Do all sections weigh the same? Thanks for any help!

Sure, happy to help! The SAT consists of two primary sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW), and Math. Each of those sections is scored on a scale of 200 to 800, with 800 being the highest possible score.

The ERW section is further broken down into Reading Test and Writing and Language Test. The scores from these two tests are combined to give your final ERW score.

The Math section, on the other hand, is not divided any further. The number of correctly answered questions determines your Math score.

Your total SAT score is a sum of your Math score and your ERW score, and it ranges from 400 to 1600.

As you might guess from their equal weight in your total SAT score, both the ERW and Math sections contribute equally to the final score. In other words, a higher score in one section can offset a lower score in the other. For example, a high Math section score will compensate for a lower ERW score, and vice versa, for a cumulative high total SAT score.

It's important to note that there's no penalty for wrong answers. So, it's always a good strategy to attempt every question in the test since you're not disadvantaged by incorrect answers.

Remember, though, that while your SAT score is a crucial aspect of your college application, it's not the only one. Colleges consider several other factors, including your grades, extracurriculars, essays, and more. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have more questions.
