Diving into ACT Scores, Specifically Those with Writing

Hey y'all! To anyone who's taken the ACT with the writing section, or know about it, could you clarify what would be considered a 'good' ACT score with writing? Is the writing score as critical as the other sections? Would love some clarity here.

A "good" ACT score, with or without the Writing section, depends largely on which colleges or universities you're aiming for, but we can certainly discuss averages. Currently, the average composite ACT score for all test-takers is around a 20.8. However, if you're targeting top-tier, highly selective schools, you're likely aiming for a composite score in the 30s.

The ACT writing test is graded on a scale of 2-12, and judging by averages again, a score of 7 and above is generally considered good. However, many admissions officers won't put a heavy emphasis on this score unless your application makes writing skills crucial (e.g., applying as an English or Journalism major).

Remember that while standardized test scores are an important aspect of your application, they're not the only thing admissions committees consider. They'll also be looking closely at your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and application essays. So, while it's definitely worth your while to prepare and target for higher scores on all sections of the ACT, it's also important to keep balance and spend sufficient time developing and highlighting the other parts of your application as well. After all, colleges are looking for well-rounded, accomplished students with a diverse portfolio rather than just a high test score.
