Breaking Down the ACT: What Is It Composed Of?

Yo, so I'm looking to take the ACT soon and I'm a bit confused about what exactly it consists of. Can anybody give me a detailed overview? Could use some help before I get started with prep. Thanks!

Absolutely, happy to break it down for you. The ACT is a standardized test used by colleges to evaluate a student's readiness for college-level work. It's made up of four main sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36, and these four scores are then averaged to give you your composite score, also on a 1-36 scale. There's also an optional writing section, which is scored separately on a 2-12 scale.

1. English Section: This section is 45 minutes long and features 75 questions. It emphasizes grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. Essentially, it's testing your ability to understand, edit, and improve written text.

2. Mathematics Section: This second section lasts 60 minutes and includes 60 questions. It covers a wide range of math topics, including pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. You are allowed to use your calculator, although technically all the questions can be answered without one.

3. Reading Section: The Reading portion is 35 minutes long with 40 questions. It includes four passages each from a different domain: prose fiction, social science, humanities, and natural science. The test checks your reading comprehension skills, asking questions on everything from main ideas to specific details.

4. Science Section: Also 35 minutes long, this section has 40 questions. Despite its name, it less about specific scientific facts and more about your ability to analyze and interpret scientific data presented in charts, graphs, tables, and research summaries.

5. Writing section (Optional): Finally, the optional writing section which you will complete in 40 minutes. You'll be given a prompt with three different perspectives on a topical issue and asked to respond, by presenting and supporting your own opinion while also analyzing the given perspectives.

And one last tip -- pacing is really important on the ACT, given the time constraint for each section, so during your preparation, make sure you practice with the timing!
