Hi guys, quick question. What's considered an 'average' ACT score? I'd like to know where I stand.
An "average" ACT score at a national level usually hovers around 20-21. This is out of a maximum possible score of 36. Where you stand, however, might also be determined in relation to your school's average score, the average scores of the college you're aiming for, or another group's average score.
For example, if you're applying to a highly selective college, their admitted students' average ACT score might be significantly higher than the national average. Top-tier universities often have average ACT scores within the 30-340 range.
Of course, these averages vary from year to year and from college to college, so it's always a good idea to check directly with the specific schools and programs you're interested in to get an understanding of their most recent numbers.
Remember though, while standardized test scores for schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, or Princeton may be high, they are not the sole factor determining the admission decision. Having an ACT score within or above the school's average range can certainly be beneficial, but schools are increasingly adopting a holistic approach to evaluate applications, looking at essays, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities and personal backgrounds too.
