Hey all, I'm a little lost. Can someone please break down what the PSAT/NMSQT stands for? What's the connection between the PSAT and the NMSQT? I know it’s important for college prep, but I’m slightly lost.
The PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It serves two main purposes.
Firstly, as the name indicates, the PSAT acts as a preliminary or practice version of the SAT. It's designed to help students familiarize themselves with the types of questions and format they will encounter on the SAT. This helps students become more prepared and less nervous when taking the actual SAT.
Secondly, the PSAT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. This is a highly respected academic recognition program and students who score exceptionally high on the PSAT in their junior year may qualify as semifinalists or finalists in this scholarship program. These designations can be extremely advantageous in the college admissions process, as they demonstrate a high level of academic performance.
In terms of structure, as of 2024, the PSAT/NMSQT is digital and consists of two sections—Reading & Writing and Math, very much like the SAT. It consists of two 32-minute modules for Reading and Writing, where you have to complete 54 questions. The Math section is also two 35-minute modules with 44 questions to be completed.
Remember, though, that your PSAT score doesn’t go on your college applications, so if it doesn't go as well as you hoped, don't worry. Use your PSAT score as a chance to identify areas for improvement before you take the SAT.
