Hi everyone, I could really use some help. I’m getting ready to apply for college and am seriously considering UCLA, but what are the various requirements to submit an application? Also, do they have their own application portal or do they use Common App? Thanks!
Hey there! UCLA is indeed a great option to consider.
The application process for UCLA, like all University of California (UC) schools, is through the UC Application system, not the Common App.
The submission period for the application is October 1 to November 30. Here are the steps and things you need to submit:
1. Complete the UC application form: You need to fill out an application that covers basics like personal information, academic history, and extracurricular activities.
2. Personal Insight Questions: You have to answer 4 out of 8 personal insight questions. Each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words. These are somewhat similar to the personal statement in the Common App, and you should aim to show a different side of you in each response, with at least one focusing on your chosen major.
3. Academic grades record: This includes all your course grades from 9th grade onwards. You have to list your courses and the grades you received in them. The UCs do not require nor accept transcripts in the initial application process.
4. Test scores: For the 2024-2025 application cycle, UCLA is test-blind, meaning the school will not consider SAT or ACT scores at all in the admission process, even if you submit them.
5. List of extracurriculars: This includes sports, clubs, work experiences, or any other activities you've been involved in outside of class. Remember that they're looking for depth rather than breadth - being highly involved in a few is often more impressive than light involvement in many.
6. Annual income: If you're a dependent, you'll need your parents' income information from the prior year. This helps the school with financial aid decisions.
Once the application is live, give yourself plenty of time to complete it without rushing, and be sure to review all your responses carefully before submitting. Best of luck with your application!
