Finding Value in Extracurricular Classes?

Yo, I'm a junior trying to figure out my schedule for next year. I'm curious about what benefits there might be in taking extracurricular classes, like cooking or video production. Is it worth giving up a core academic slot for one, or is it better to stay focused on the hard STEM/AP-type classes?

Hi there!

First off, I think it's great that you're keen on learning outside the traditional academic sphere. Cooking and video production are skills that can offer both personal growth and unique opportunities to showcase your creativity and diverse interests in college applications.

Nevertheless, the choice between extracurricular classes and more academically rigorous courses would depend significantly on your post-high school plans. If you're aiming for colleges that place a heavy emphasis on academic rigor, it might be beneficial to go for the more academically rigorous AP-type classes, especially if you have your sights on a STEM field.

On the flip side, if you've already taken a good number of AP classes and are doing well in them, adding in an extracurricular class could show that you have a well-rounded character and are not solely focused on academics. Colleges also appreciate students who demonstrate a continuing curiosity and a willingness to step outside of their comfort zones.

Consider how the class would fit within your overall high school journey, especially in terms of maintaining a balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and your wellbeing. If you have space in your schedule and feel that these classes would add value in terms of interest and developing different skills, there's certainly no harm in pursuing them!

Remember, the most important thing is to engage in classes and activities that you genuinely enjoy, as your passion and interest also translate into motivation and productivity. Good luck with your decision!
