Guys, I'm sitting the PSAT this fall and I'm not sure what to expect. Could anyone give me an overview of what's covered? Like, is it all multiple choice or are there other types of questions?
The PSAT, also known as the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), tests your skills and knowledge in two main areas: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.
In the Mathematics section, you'll come across questions that require you to demonstrate a strong understanding of several different mathematical concepts, from algebra to data analysis, problem-solving, and some geometry. You will be allowed to use your calculator on both math modules. This section is 70 minutes long, spread over two modules, and has 44 multiple-choice questions in total.
The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section is composed of two parts: Reading Test and Writing and Language Test.
The Reading Test is composed of reading passages and accompanying questions. This test deals with comprehension and asks you to interpret texts and answer questions on them. These texts could be literature, informational graphics, or excerpts from social studies or science.
The Writing and Language Test, on the other hand, involves you reading passages and then identifying and correcting grammar, punctuation, and other usage errors. It also tests your understanding of words in context and your command of evidence.
Both of these modules are 32 minutes long and comprise 54 questions - 27 for each. All questions in the PSAT are multiple choice. The duration of the entire test is 134 minutes, with a total of 98 questions.
Remember to use the Bluebook™ app to familiarize yourself with the digital format and take a full-length practice test. Additionally, the PSAT is a preliminary test, so try not to stress too much about it - it's mainly an opportunity for you to get familiar with the structure and content you'll encounter on the SAT.
That said, if you want some general tips on how to feel more comfortable and confident on the PSAT, I'd check out this blog post from CollegeVine: https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-study-for-the-psat/. Good luck with your preparation!
