When to Take SATs

Hey guys, I'm currently a sophomore and I've heard different things from my friends and teachers. When is generally the best time to take my SAT? Junior year, or should I begin earlier?

Given your current sophomore status, the smart move would be to start preparing for your SATs now, but primarily aim to take the actual test in your junior year. More specifically, many students find it beneficial to take the SAT for the first time in the spring of their junior year. This gives you plenty of time to get familiar with the test format, work on areas of weakness, and practice regularly.

The spring timeframe also aligns with when you may be finishing up Algebra II or Pre-Calculus, which covers the majority of the math tested on the SAT. Having this knowledge fresh in your mind can be advantageous.

Also, taking the SAT in the spring of your junior year gives you room to retake the test in the summer or early fall if you're not satisfied with your score. Remember that colleges generally look at your highest SAT score, so it's not a problem to take it multiple times.

Like any test, thorough preparation is key, so be sure to utilize resources like prep books, online guides, and potentially a tutor if you need more personalized help. The College Board also offers free study materials and practice tests, which can be a helpful place to start. You’re well ahead of the game by considering this early on in your sophomore year. Study wisely!
