Requesting letter of recommendation from teacher - advice?

Just a stressed junior here, planning to ask some of my teachers for college recommendation letters soon. What's the best way to approach them about it? Any tips on what I should request them to highlight about me, if they agree?

Taking the step to ask for recommendation letters is important, so kudos for thinking ahead. Here are a few pieces of advice to make the process smoother for both you and your teachers:

Firstly, it's essential to approach your teachers well in advance. Teachers generally appreciate at least a month's notice before the letter deadline, as writing a thoughtful, detailed recommendation takes time.

Now, as to whom you should ask: Consider the teachers who know you best, ideally from your junior year and maybe even earlier, and in subjects that are relevant to your intended major, if you have chosen one. For example, if you're planning to study physics, a letter from your physics teacher would carry more weight.

As for what you request them to highlight, you might want to sit down and reflect on your strengths and experiences in their class. Consider discussing specific instances where you've demonstrated perseverance, intellectual curiosity, creativity, or any other trait you'd like a college to know about. Instances where you collaborated well with others, showed leadership, or went above and beyond with a project or assignment are always good to mention.

You can also inspire their memory by providing them a "brag sheet" or a resumé outlining your achievements, awards, extracurricular activities, work experience, etc. It can help paint a broader picture of you as a student and could aid them in writing a more comprehensive letter.

Finally, remember to show your gratitude for the time and effort they're investing in your future, maybe even with a thank you note or a small gift after they've submitted your letter.

I hope these tips help, and best of luck with your application process.
