Hello peeps. So, there's something I've been wrestling with. I have a hard time concentrating for long periods, and I just want to know how long the SAT lasts, including breaks and if there are any strategies to manage my attention. Thanks!
Sure, happy to help break down the timing for you!
Since spring 2024, the SAT has gone fully digital and the structure has changed a bit. Now it consists of two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math, with each section broken down further into two modules. The Reading and Writing section consists of two 32-minute modules to complete 54 questions, giving you around 71 seconds per question. The Math section is made up of two 35-minute modules, to complete a total of 44 questions which equates to roughly 96 seconds per question, or a bit over a minute and a half.
Unlike the previous format, there is no "no-calculator" section. So, you can use your calculator for both math modules. This gives you a total testing time of 134 minutes, or a little over 2 hours, to complete 98 questions.
In terms of breaks, you get a short 5-minute break after the first hour or so of testing. You also get a 10-minute break after the second hour of testing. Please note that these breaks are not optional, they're pre-determined.
When managing your attention during the test, the best strategy is practice. The more familiar you are with the test, the better you’ll be at managing your time. Consider simulating the real test conditions by using The Bluebook™ app, which offers a full-length practice test. Also, make sure to focus on one question at a time to avoid overwhelm. Prioritize sleep and nutrition in the days leading up to the test. During the test, ensure to utilize your breaks. Stand up, stretch, or have a quick snack. This can give your mind a much-needed rest and help you maintain focus.
Hope this clarification helps and all the best with your preparation!
