Thoughts on Cal State Monterrey Bay?

Cal State Monterey Bay is a public university and a part of the California State University system. Its location in Seaside, California, endows it with a great coastal vibe along with access to outdoor activities such as hiking and surfing. Its campus is located near the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, perfect for students interested in marine biology and environmental sciences.

Academically, CSUMB offers 25 undergraduate degrees with marine science, business, and psychology being among the popular ones. The school is relatively smaller compared to other public universities in California, with a student population under 10,000. This leads to smaller class sizes and opportunities for individual attention from professors, an advantage that students often highlight.

CSUMB also provides ample experiential learning opportunities – internships, service learning, and capstone projects are all integrated into its curriculum, which can be an asset if you are seeking hands-on experience along with your education.

Keep in mind, Cal State schools are primarily aimed at in-state students, and have a student body heavily made up of Californian residents. While this leads to a very community-oriented and familiar environment, it might be something to consider if you are an out-of-state or international student.

An interesting facet of CSUMB is its focus on social justice and environmental conservation, which can be a large draw for students passionate about these areas. Their focus on inclusivity is apparent in their learning environments and campus events.

In terms of campus life, there are many resources provided to students for their wellbeing and entertainment. However, some students have reported that the nightlife scene isn't particularly vibrant given the campus's location in a smaller town.

While CSUMB might not have the prestige of the UC schools or the larger state universities, it could be a good fit if you're looking for a smaller, more intimate learning setting, substantial interaction with faculty, and proximity to outdoor recreational activities.

Remember that the California State University applications are open from October 1 to November 30, so you have plenty of time to explore more about CSUMB and see if it fits well with what you're looking for in a college experience.
