Deciding on ACT Timing

Hi everyone, I could use some advice. I am in the process of planning my ACT timeline and I'm not sure when would be the best time to take the test. Should it be in the junior year or the senior year? Your experiences would be super helpful.

When deciding on your ACT timeline, it's important to consider both your academic schedule and your college application deadlines. Taking the ACT early in your junior year can be beneficial because it allows ample time to retake the test if necessary. Many students opt for a first attempt in the winter of their junior year, with a potential retest in the spring.

On the other hand, if you're keen on taking challenging courses in your junior year that may enhance your foundational knowledge for certain ACT sections (like advanced math or science courses), waiting until the end of the junior year or early senior year might be beneficial.

However, keep in mind that if you take the ACT during your senior year, you should aim to take it as early as possible. College applications usually have a fixed deadline (commonly around early November for Early Decision/Action and January for Regular Decision). To ensure your scores arrive on time for these deadlines, the latest ACT exam date you should consider is in September/October of your senior year.

Ultimately the best time to take the ACT depends on your individual circumstances and preparation plan. You should allow enough time for studying, retesting if necessary, and ensuring your scores make it to your desired colleges before the application deadlines.
