Hey y'all, my school in New York has this thing called the NYS Board of Regents exams. I'm not sure if colleges from other states consider this while making admissions decisions? Anyone have any thoughts or experiences?
The New York State Board of Regents exams are standardized tests that measure student proficiency in different high school subjects. Regarding their significance in college applications, the emphasis can vary depending on individual college policies, but generally, out-of-state colleges do not place much weight on them, especially highly selective ones.
It's important to note that the rigor of your coursework and your performance therein are what matter most. Colleges want to see that you have challenged yourself within the context of your school's opportunities. While Regents exams can showcase mastery in a subject matter, they are less universally recognized than, for instance, AP or IB exams.
If you've performed exceptionally well on Regents exams, you can certainly include that information in your application to provide more context about your academic achievements. Furthermore, exceptional performance, like a high score on a challenging subject's Regents exam, can add a positive aspect to your academic profile.
Regardless, make sure you balance your focus on Regents with your other academic priorities, such as maintaining strong grades in rigorous classes and performing well, if you choose to take them, on widely recognized standardized tests like the SAT/ACT.
