Best time to start studying for the SAT?

Hey everyone, just a bit stressed over here. I'm not exactly sure when I should start studying for the SAT? Like, is it better to start early like in sophomore year, or wait till junior year? How much time would you generally recommend for a good prep? Thanks for any advice!

There's definitely no one-size-fits-all answer to your question as it can depend on your personal schedule, academic workload, and individual goals. Nevertheless, a general guideline for SAT study is to start preparing about 3-6 months before your exam date. This time frame can allow for thorough coverage of all test content and leaves room for adaptability if things don't go according to plan.

Starting in your sophomore year could be beneficial if you're aiming for very high scores or if you want to get a head start. You could begin with light but consistent studying, gradually amping up the intensity as you get closer to your test date. This approach can ease the pressure that cramming can bring.

On the other hand, waiting until your junior year may better align with your high school curriculum as you'll likely be taking higher-level math classes and your reading and writing skills will have advanced. Starting junior year doesn’t mean you wait until the last minute, though. Beginning your preparation at the start of your junior year can be a good timeline.

Take a few practice tests along the way to gauge your progress and adjust your study plan as needed. Remember that the pace of study will depend on your baseline score, target score, and how quickly you personally learn. Don’t hesitate to seek help if you are struggling with specific sections.

As for the commit time per week, again it does vary, but spending 10-20 hours a week is a common range. Always remember, regular, disciplined study often yields better results than inconsistent, lengthy cram sessions. Good luck with your prep!
