Getting into Harvard?

So I'm aiming high - real high. I'd love to get that acceptance letter from Harvard. Anyone got some top-notch advice for making it happen? Anything that might increase my odds, or is it all just a lottery?

Your desire to aim for the stars is commendable! Just remember, Harvard, like many other highly selective institutions, has an extremely competitive admissions process with many aspects being considered.

The Academic Index is of high importance. This is a value that encapsulates your academic performance, encapsulating the strength of your grades, test scores, and class rank. It's pivotal to maintain a high GPA and try for top percentile scores on the SAT/ACT (remembering the SAT is now digital). Rigorous coursework such as AP classes, where possible, helps demonstrate academic prowess.

A huge part of your application will be your extracurricular activities. Harvard doesn't solely want well-rounded candidates; they are interested in those who have proved their potential and passion in a particular field, possessing a developed specialty, or what's known as a 'spike'. Having 8-10 total extracurricular activities is common amongst successful applicants, with quality preferred over quantity. Aim for Tier 1 or 2 activities, showcasing leadership or exceptional achievement at national or international level.

Essays too play a huge part. Avoid cliched topics and make sure you’re providing an interesting and personal narrative. Depict how you’ve overcome an obstacle, your unique experiences, or a specific event that has influenced your life and aspirations significantly.

Let's not forget, for the 2024-2025 application cycle, Harvard has reverted to requiring an SAT or ACT score, keeping in mind that how each section is structured might be different due to recent changes in the SAT going digital.

And lastly, I would advise you to apply Early Action if Harvard is your first choice. This can give you a slight edge in their admissions process.

While Harvard's low acceptance rate might make it seem like a lottery, remember that there is a method to this process and each part of your application matters. Best of luck!
