Differences between PSAT and SAT Scores?

Hi fam, does anyone know how the PSAT vs SAT scores compare? Are they graded the same way or is there a significant difference?

Sure, I can help with that! The PSAT and the SAT are both exams designed by the College Board and they have similar structures, but there are several important differences between the two, including how they're scored.

The PSAT, also known as the Preliminary SAT, has a highest possible score of 1520, while the SAT score ranges up to 1600. Both exams have two main sections - Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math. Each section is scored on a scale of 160 to 760 for the PSAT and 200 to 800 for the SAT, which then gets added together for your total score.

The reason for this difference is because the PSAT is pitched at slightly easier content compared to the SAT, as it's targeted towards juniors in high school (or even sophomores) while the SAT is often taken by seniors who've had one more year of formal education. Therefore, the scale reflects that the PSAT covers slightly less demanding content than the SAT.

When converting PSAT scores to SAT scores, it isn't an exact 1-to-1 conversion, though it's somewhat close. For example, if you get a score of 1150 on the PSAT, that would be roughly equivalent to an SAT score of around 1180.

Also, remember the PSAT does not have an optional essay section, while the SAT used to have one, but it was discontinued in 2021.

Keep in mind, though, that while both tests are quite similar, the stakes are a bit different - the SAT scores are considered by colleges during the admissions process, while the PSAT is primarily a practice test that can also lead to National Merit Scholarship recognition.
