Average SAT score - where do I stand?

Hi all, I just got my SAT score and want to understand how it compares. What's the average SAT score? Are there substantial differences from one state to another? Any info would be appreciated.

Hello there! You've asked a very good question and I'll do my best to provide a comprehensive response. First, let's focus on the average SAT score nationally.

As of the most recent data, the average total SAT score is approximately 1060 out of 1600. Now, this incorporates both the Math section and the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, each of which is scored on a scale of 200-800. It's also worth noting that achieving an average score of 1060 does not necessarily guarantee admissions to all colleges. Admission depends on numerous other factors as well.

In regard to differences from state to state, it is true that average scores can vary significantly. For example, some states might have an average score that's quite a bit higher than the national average, while others might be lower. It's important to note that these averages can be influenced by factors like the number of students taking the exam in a given state, the educational policies of the state, and access to study resources, among things.

Nevertheless, please remember that these are average values and don't define the acceptance or rejection of your college application. Having a good SAT score is great, but colleges do look at other factors like GPA, letters of recommendation, personal essays, and extracurricular activities. Even at universities where your SAT score is a vital component, it's not the only decisive factor.

Finally, as the SAT went fully digital in 2024, you might want to get yourself familiar with the new structure and practice on the Bluebook™ app to better understand and potentially improve your score.

Good luck with everything, and don't hesitate to ask if you have other questions!
