800 on the SAT?

Hey everyone, I'm kinda freaking out a bit here. I scored 800 on the SAT. Is this a decent score? And how will top-tier schools view it?

It's essential to recognize that the SAT is scored out of a maximum of 1600, with the Reading/Writing section and the Mathematics section each providing up to 800 points. Therefore, an 800 would be an exceptional score if you're referring to a single section (either Reading/Writing or Math).

However, if you're referencing your cumulative SAT score, you should also be aware that 800 is toward the lower end of the scale. For top-tier schools, the middle 50% of admitted students usually have SAT scores in the range of 1400-1550.

For instance, its worth mentioning that at Dartmouth College, the average SAT score of admitted students in the class of 2024 was around 1500. At schools like Harvard or Yale, the middle 50% of admitted students typically score between 1460 and 1580. These scores provide an idea of the competitiveness at these institutions.

Remember, while your SAT score is an important part of your application, it is not the sole determiner for admission. Colleges will also evaluate your grades, the rigor of your coursework, your extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendation letters. Your underperforming SAT score can be compensated by other robust components in your application.

The best approach to improve your SAT score would build a study plan and perhaps use resources like the College Board's official practice tests, or the Bluebook™ app that offers the full test's digital preview. Whether you decide to retake the test or to move on and focus on strengthening other facets of your application, remember that there are many successful paths to college, even when initial test scores aren't what one hoped for.
