AP Lit Essay: Quality over Quantity?

Hey guys, I'm in the midst of studying for my AP Lit class and I'm struggling with the essay part. What's more important, the depth of my analysis or the quantity of examples I provide?

Given your dilemma, it's important to maintain a good balance between analysis and examples. However, if you're choosing between depth of analysis and quantity of examples, the depth of your analysis generally takes precedence.

Why is depth important? Adeptly analyzing an example demonstrates a robust understanding of the text and its themes, which is the essence of AP Literature. You reveal your comprehension of not only plot details but also subtler elements like theme, tone, symbolism, and character development.

What about examples? While examples support your analysis, inundating your essay with too many may leave you little space for in-depth examination. Your examples should only serve to provide evidence for the points you're making, not to fill up space.

Remember, a well-written essay often conveys a clear thesis supported by a select number of pertinent examples, each explored comprehensively. To implement this, connect each example back to your thesis, explain why it's significant, and draw on textual evidence to affirm your point. This approach exhibits your ability to think critically and write analytically.

As you continue studying, I suggest practicing this strategy—start with a clear and concise thesis, find a couple of strong examples that support your thesis, and spend time analyzing each one. With practice, balancing quality and quantity will become more intuitive. Good luck with your AP Lit exam.
