Hey, quick question about SATs. How many total points is the SAT out of? I'm trying to set a goal score for myself.
The SAT, in its current format, is scored out of a total of 1600 points. This total is essentially divided into two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math, each of which contributes up to 800 points to the total score.
If you're setting a goal score for yourself, it might be helpful to understand how these individual sections are scored as well. Each section is based on the number of correct answers you provide, with no penalty for incorrect answers. This score then gets converted into a scaled score that ranges from 200 to 800.
Please remember your goal score should align with the competitiveness of the colleges you're aspiring to attend, and with your own abilities. Researching the middle 50% SAT scores of recently admitted students at your dream schools can be a great way to set a realistic and ambitious target score.
