Hi everyone, I'm planning my first SAT attempt soon and I'm trying to get a feel for the day. Exactly how long is the test itself? Any tips for managing time throughout the exam?
Hi, great question! As of spring 2024, the SAT is entirely digital and has a new duration and structure. The total duration of the digital SAT is 134 minutes and it consists of 98 questions. Here's the breakdown:
1. Reading and Writing: Two 32-minute modules, to complete 54 questions. This gives you about 71 seconds per question.
2. Math: Two 35-minute modules, to complete 44 questions. This gives you approximately 96 seconds per question, or a little over a minute and a half.
Regarding time management, it's crucial to have a strong strategy for each section.
For the Reading and Writing sections, don't spend too much time on any one question. If you can't decide on an answer, make your best guess, mark the question for review, and move on. The aim is to get through as many questions as you can without running out of time.
For the Math sections, remember you can use your calculator on both modules, as there's no no-calculator section anymore. Prioritize problems that seem easier or quicker to solve, and only then move onto the longer, more complex problems.
Remember to breathe! It's natural to feel some pressure under timed conditions but try your best to stay calm and composed. Lastly, remember, you can preview the digital SAT and take a full-length practice test on the Bluebook™ app. This should give you a very clear idea of what to expect. Best of luck with your preparation and exam!
