Best Colleges for Design Programs

Hey folks, I'm seriously considering a career in design (not sure if graphic or industrial yet). I'd love some recommendations on what colleges offer the best design programs, especially those that could help me build a strong portfolio.

Sure thing, when it comes to top-notch design programs, there are several universities that are often recognized for their exceptional offerings.

Carnegie Mellon University is at the helm with the School of Design, having programs in industrial and graphic design, and even extending to more specialized areas like interaction design and design for environments. Their curriculum focuses on honing students' expertise, and the school also provides opportunities for real-world design problems, aiding in the creation of a strong portfolio.

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is another institution you might want to look into. It's renowned for a reason, offering BFA degrees in a staggering 19 disciplines including Graphic Design and Industrial Design. What's unique about RISD is the intense studio-focused curriculum that truly allows students to master their craft.

Parsons School of Design at The New School offers programs in both areas you're considering - Graphic and Industrial Design. At Parsons, there's a focus on sustainable and socially responsible design which might appeal to you if you're interested in these areas.

University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning is one more option to ponder. Its approach to cooperative education, where students alternate semesters of academic study with full-time employment in positions aligned with their career interests, can immensely benefit your portfolio as well as practical experience.

Lastly, don't discount University of California--Los Angeles (UCLA). It offers Design Media Arts where students can work across media domains, including drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, and 3-D design.

Keep in mind, choosing a program should not only be about the rankings but also about fit. Be sure to delve a bit into each program's design philosophy and evaluate how well it aligns your personal goals and perspectives. Do employ resources like each school's website and their design portfolios of recent graduates to get a good feel of the program. All the best!
